Chesa Grischuna: Switzerland’s Best Kept Secret

  • Claudia
  • February 20, 2023

There are places that are so wonderful that you don’t even want to tell your best friends about them. But then you do, because after all, joy shared is joy doubled. One such case is the traditional Chesa Grischuna in Klosters. It is an absolute insider tip in Switzerland.

Hollywood on the Rocks

When you climb up the creaky steps into one of the only 24 rooms and suites, you somehow suspect that you are on the trail of something special here. The luxury is not really obvious. But you can feel it in every corner and in the smallest details. In the evening, you lay your head on hand-woven bed linen. In the morning, you pull aside hand-printed curtains to enjoy the view of the imposing mountains. And then you head out for a delicious breakfast.

This, as well as lunch and dinner, is served on dishes specially designed for the Chesa Grischuna. Still manufactured by Villeroy & Boch. “Still” because the hotel has had a decisive influence on the fashionable ski resort since 1938. Hollywood celebrities such as Greta Garbo, Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire have already shaken a leg here in the “Chesa Bar”. This earned the noble hotel the nickname “Hollywood on the Rocks”. Even crowned heads, not only from the English aristocracy, politicians like Churchill and writers went out for a drink in the Chesa Grischuna.

A Piece of Conceptual Art

They were all equally impressed by the hotel, which is considered a conceptual work of art. Planned down to the smallest detail by Zurich architect Hermann Schneider and featuring murals by Alois Carigiet, the Chesa Grischuna is a historic hotel gem. The descendants of famous Hollywood stars are still among the hotel’s regular guests. They appreciate the tradition, but can also look forward to some innovations in the future.

The fate of the hotel legend in Graubünden – the youngest listed hotel in Switzerland – was recently taken over by the Zurich entrepreneurial couple Astrid von Stockar and Clemens Gregor. They want to revive the old mountain elegance. The two are well aware of the hotel’s importance: “The purchase is a matter of the heart for us. We want to preserve this wonderful work of art for Klosters and our vacation guests. A Klosters without the legendary Chesa Grischuna is simply unthinkable,” says Astrid von Stockar.

New Old Elegance

Guests can expect highly personalized and excellent service in the future as well. In addition, Herbert Moser could be won as manager for the à la carte restaurant, which is considered the best in the entire region. He is known from the Walserhof, formerly the best restaurant in Switzerland.

At his side will be chef Ronald Fressner, known for example from the Suvretta House. There is another innovation in terms of bars. The “Chesa Bar” remains in its former glory. However, it has received an outdoor extension in the form of the “Hot Spot” bar. It probably won’t be too long before the Hollywood stars rediscover the Chesa Grischuna – so we’re taking the precaution of booking a room right away!
